Australian Fly Fishing Museum

Ever thought of giving something back to the community? Yes I am talking about volunteering.

The Australian Fly Fishing Museum needs volunteers for the Clarendon site - just out of Evandale in Northern Tasmania.

It is a pretty easy job and a knowledge of fishing or fly fishing is not a requirement. Training is provided. If you do have an interest in fly fishing all the better.

Arthurs Lake Report 12/1/2014

Hi all had a trip to Arthurs with Derek Poole on Friday after he finished work at 1 pm. We arrived at Jonah Bay about 2pm and up to the cowpaddock by 2.30 pm. We started drifting but there wasn't a lot going on. After about half way through the drift i caught one and boated it.

St Helens 10/1/2014

Hi all, Jamie Morehouse and I decided to take our two young blokes to St Helens this morning in search of a few Silver Trevally. We left home at 4 am which was a bit of a shock to them but thanks to Jamie's expert guiding the day was very worthwhile. We landed 17 in a couple of hours with at least 5 over 42 cm in length. Jamie even got "smoked" by two that he couldn't stop.

Tommahawk and St Helens

Sending you a couple of photos that i got today of a huge gummy shark that Bailey caught at Tommahawk yesterday It must be around 25kg or more by the look of it,certainly a horsre,he and Johnno caught a few others and some nice flathead.

My brother Paul went to St.Helens, and got a couple of nice crays in the pots, scrubby is holding a good one, they also caught some nice flatties and morwong.

The National Fly Fishing Champinships

The National Fly Fishing Champinships were held over 3 days finishing Sunday with Josh Flowers of Meander finishing a brilliant first at only 18 years old (first Nationals) and Jonothan Stagg of Relbia a close second (previous 3 times National winner and 11th individual in the last World Championships in Norway).Vern Barby of Ballarat was third.

In the Teams Event, Victoria was first, Tasmania second and South Australia/Western Australia third.

Mercury toxicity in Bream from the Derwent River

Hi Carl, I am a semi-regular reader of your column in the Mercury (don’t read the paper on a regular basis), but I have noticed at least two photos in recent weeks of people posing with bream which have been caught in the Derwent.

The Derwent Estuary Program, which is run in part by the State Government, publishes a pamphlet on the safety of seafood from the Derwent River. I have attached a copy for you to read, but it is available at the following link.

The most important take-home message from this pamphlet is that it is unsafe to consume any bream caught in the River Derwent, as the levels of Mercury greatly exceed food safety limits (see the graph on pg 2).

Great Lake 1/12/2013

Hi all - I had the long weekend off so decided to go fishing instead of the Devonport show. Arrived at the Great Lake around 3pm hit the water which I must say was not pleasant by 5pm in the Little lake. Got 3 nice Brownies of good condition by 8pm.

Saturday morning things were much more pleasant and got 5 nice Brownies by 9.30, then with a change in the weather coming later in the afternoon decided to hit the water early to be ready at 4.30 and headed to Reynolds neck.

Lake Augusta 1/12/2013

Had a trip up to Lake Augusta today with my brother Paul and his son Nathan. We arrived around 11am and finished around 7pm. It was mostly sunny and a light southerly breeze. We managed to catch 13 trout, one being a rainbow. It was Nathans first time here and one day he wont forget as he bagged out. The fish were caught on yep red nut, berkley black & gold t.tails and olive pearl t.tails. The size of fish was around 1lb up to 3lb.most in good nick,a couple were average. The fish had been feeding on scud and gum beetles.
