Tiny creeks and sea run trout - Christopher Bassano

Christopher Bassano fishes over 250 days a year. This interview was recorded just before he headed off to fish for Australia in the World Fly Fishing Championships in Norway 14-17 August 2013.

I live on a small stream and at the start of the season I like to go off on a bit of a discovery mission and fish the headwaters of the creeks and rivers I feel an affinity with.

These small rivers include the St Pats, Meander, Forester, Little Forester and others. The further up you go on these rivers the clearer and lower the levels. They are often less affected by the rain and runoff and you get some good opportunities. Get as close to the source as you can and you will find some good dry fly fishing. Don’t limit yourself to those I have mentioned. Most headwaters will hold trout.

It’s been five years since I last did an article on Lake Echo so time for an update on my still favourite water. Each year I manage several trips which due to the distance from home are usually one or two night excursions. The spring months from September through till November still rate as the best times however the month of April in ideal conditions can be brilliant. By ideal conditions I mean rough as hell, in fact during April the rougher the better. Most Tassie autumns can be quite mild and some seasons I haven’t even gone as it was just too calm.

Anglers Licence Fees at Work - Lake Echo Road Upgrade

Improved road surface to Large Bay, Lake Echo. The road to Large Bay, Lake Echo has been upgraded over the last three days by the Inland Fisheries Service to improve access by all vehicles to the north-western side of the lake in preparation for the Christmas break.

Good things come to whose who wait!
A new year promise to an old friend, Mike, from Ulverstone, to take him fishing at Lake Echo finally came to fruition.
If you want to catch large numbers trolling it is imperative to have the weather conditions ‘spot on’. Wind less than 10 knots, heavy cloud, some drizzle and no thunder or lightening. After pestering the weather bureau for days Sunday’s weather forecast turned out to be ideal!

There are several things we look for in our early season trout waters.
