Broadbill Swordfish

Tasmania has taken centre stage this month within game fishing circles nationally. You won’t see that often in a lifetime of fishing. Sure we are world renowned for our bluefin fishery and close proximity to the grounds, but what has excited the nation’s anglers is Tasmania’s recent broadbill swordfish action.

Overnight my aunt Fanny......
Leo Millar and his devoted crew have been putting considerable man hours both on and off the water in working out this species in Tasmania. It has long been the feeling of a number of Tasmania’s top anglers that good numbers of broadbill swordfish (xiphias gladius) are off our magical shores. The incidental by-catch from recreational long liners and a few captures on electric reels has suggested as such.

Low Head Boat Ramp Upgrade - Delayed Reopening

Unfortunately yet another delay with reopening the ramp – now next Friday (27 June)! The dive crew the Contractors had booked to do the underwater work withdrew at the last minute. Fortunately they were able to get a replacement crew onsite on Wednesday and the dive work was finished yesterday. Just couple of things to finish off now and we should be ok to reopen next week.

St Helens Multi Species Comp 2014

Despite preceding weeks of calm winds and glassy conditions Georges Bay threw a bit of a curve ball for the weekend of the now traditional winter interclub, multispecies competition at St Helens. Blustery southerlies flecked the bay with whitecaps and chilled the visitors practising on Saturday and made the Sunday comp far more challenging.
Some 18 visiting anglers in took on a small contingent of locals and by early morning a small armada of dinghies were scattered across the bay; the goal to catch the greatest diversity of species possible. Rocky points, sea-grass flats, jetty pylons, fast flowing channels and shallow banks provided varied habitats and required differing techniques to maximise chances.

Coastal Catches 12/6/2014

I had a call late last week from a commercial fisherman who was out off Marrawah and saw some huge schools of Bluefin Tuna. He said he had never seen them in the area in those numbers in all his years of fishing. A few fisho’s headed to the far North West over the weekend and reported one boat caught 10 and another 4. This is great news and we hope they continue turning up every year.

Coastal Catches 5/6/2014

I mentioned that the West Coast was the place to be last weekend and the prophecy turned out to be correct. There have been numerous reports of good catches of Stripy Trumpeter and there were also some Bluefin Tuna caught just out from Strahan. It’s good to see them there, as it is a much shorter drive to the West Coast than to Eaglehawk Neck. There are however less opportunities due to the Wild West coast weather. If the weather allows it would be well worth a look.

World Fly Fishing Championship 2014

The World Championships are over and we are on the road to Prague, just stopped now in Ceske Budovice for breakfast/coffee at - wait for it - McDonalds! The boys are looking pretty comfortable tucking into their Veprova Bageta Deluxes, loosely translated by John Fisher as "a Big Mac with a lot of something". We have another couple of hours of driving to Prague airport where Luke and Hobbsy will catch flights home and the rest of us will go on to Devon in England for the Commonwealth Championships.
