GOOD START TO SEASON AFTER A WEEKS DELAY

Well even though my back was only around 60% okay, I decided it was time to hit a river and have my first session for the 2014-15 season. Weather conditions were great in the Sheffield area today with overcast conditions and only a light breeze, so I headed off to the Dasher River around 1.15pm and was in the river by 1.40pm. The river was a slight light tannin colour and was flowing reasonably fast and much higher than I would have preferred. But I wasn't too fussed as it was just great to finally be able to get in a river and have a spin session. I chewed on a couple of Panadol as I started to work my way upstream casting the little Mepps #00 Black Fury gold upsteam and working it back and across the medium flowing sections of the Dasher.

Rock Lobster Fishery Re-opening

The recreational and commercial rock lobster fisheries in the Maria Island Biotoxin Zone re-opened from 00:01 on Saturday, 19 July 2014. This means there are no paralytic shellfish toxin (PST) closures in place on the east coast for rock lobster. The results of rock lobster sampled from the Maria Island Biotoxin zone have shown PST levels below the regulatory limit. The standing Public Health Alert from the Department of Health and Human Services recommending that people discard rock lobster gut remains in place.

22kg Albacore

Rocky Carosi and Sarina with a 22kg albacore caught today, Tuesday 22 July, on Pulfers Reef of Scamander. Several others were caught and southern bluefin tuna as well.

Awesome gamefishing still off the east coast - at the end of July. Rocky reckons it is the best fishing of the year - and look at the weather.

Barnacle encrusted Mercury Outboard starts

A barnacle encrusted Mercury outboard recovered some 200 nautical miles off Dampier in Western Australia, started after spending months underwater. Marine Engineer Matt Giles was working on the Offshore Support Vessel “Far Shogun” when an upturned tinnie was spotted in the water. “It was a 3.2m Stacer and going by the barnacles and other marine growth on the hull it looked as if it (and the engine) had been underwater for a few months at least,” he said.

Broadbill Swordfish

Tasmania has taken centre stage this month within game fishing circles nationally. You won’t see that often in a lifetime of fishing. Sure we are world renowned for our bluefin fishery and close proximity to the grounds, but what has excited the nation’s anglers is Tasmania’s recent broadbill swordfish action.

Overnight my aunt Fanny......

Leo Millar and his devoted crew have been putting considerable man hours both on and off the water in working out this species in Tasmania. It has long been the feeling of a number of Tasmania’s top anglers that good numbers of broadbill swordfish (xiphias gladius) are off our magical shores. The incidental by-catch from recreational long liners and a few captures on electric reels has suggested as such.
