Check Your Inflatable PFDs before EVERY trip

Do you have an Inflatable PFD?

  • 72% of Tasmanian boaters do.
  • MAST considers this equates to in excess of 80,000 jackets.
  • Last financial year only one in forty two were serviced by manufacturer’s accredited agents.
  • Is it auto or manual inflate?
  • Does your crew know how to use a manual inflate PFD?

Will yours work when required?

Do a self check EVERY time you go boating and EXPLAIN TO EVERYONE ON BOARD how to use them.  The pocket,  or cord must be pulled to activate a manual inflate PFD.

Make sure the cylinder is screwed in firmly. Cylinders can vibrate loose and may not activate when required.

Auto inflate PFDs should still be checked to ensure cylinder is seated correctly, but they will activate within a couple of seconds on being immersed. Most manual inflate yokes and jackets can be retro-fitted with auto inflate activators. Check with the manufacturer or your retailer.

Most inflatable PFDs can be manual inflated, or deflated, whilst being worn with a few puffs. Look and learn how to use this feature.

Keep your PFD buckled or zipped. If not correctly worn it may be ineffective.

Get your inflatable serviced according to the recommendations shown on the jacket or visit www.mast.tas.gov.au for self-checking advice.

Under existing legislation, inflatable flotation devices must be maintained in accordance with the recommendations of the manufacturer.

Please, service your jacket. It may just save your life or the life of one of your family or crew.
