Many anglers are preparing for the opening of the new angling season on Saturday 7 August and it's shaping up to be another good one with the fishery in excellent health as a result of last year’s drought breaking rains. There are many great fishing locations around the State from which to choose for the opening weekend and early season fishing but here are a few suggestions.
Please check all relevant authorities before fishing - www.ifs.tas.gov.au and dpipwe.tas.gov.au . Don't forget issuu.com/stevenspublishing for years of back issues !

Suzuki Marine recently launched its newly refreshed service school, now located at The Haines Group’s recently refurbished state of the art facility in Wacol, Brisbane. The two-day workshop operates 25 times a year, and offers dealership technicians the opportunity to train and become up-to-date on new products and technical advances introduced by Suzuki.
While the winter months have been ticking by I have been on a couple of northern fishing trips one catching barra, threadfin salmon, trevally along with a couple of dozen other species. Trip number two was to New Britain which is part of New Guinea, we were fishing for the hard fighting black and spot tail bass, they are a remote fish in an absolute remote area of the world. It was a great trip and really is good to broaden one's knowledge into other fish species.
The rock lobster fishery is in decline. The biomass has reduced and is still in decline. The total catch must be reduced to allow the biomass to rise.
There is real thought amongst recreational fishers that Government, and more particularly the fisheries department does no more than give recreational fishers lip service.

The Rock Lobster Management Plan Review commenced in April 2009 with the current set of rules in place until February 2011. Since the review commenced TARFish have been involved in meetings with the Department of Primary Industries, Parks, Water and Environment (DIPWE) and the Tasmanian Rock Lobster Fisherman’s Association (TRLFA), the commercial rock lobster fishers. The meetings have been to understand the issues the fishery faces and what measures may be required to ensure the rock lobster fishery is sustainable for all stakeholders into the future.Went out again last night as conditions were perfect and we knew it would be a while before we struck the tides and everything "just right" like it is at the moment. We also had to factor in that I had couple of children wanting to go urgently after the previous night with Dale where we scored a few and they were left at home.
With the trout season now closed for Trev and myself at least (we don't bother with the waters still open from now on), we thought we would head down the Tamar and try for a feed of Flounder.
Where to go? .... that was the question.

The first Atlantic salmon eggs used to begin Tasmania's Atlantic salmon aquaculture industry were introduced into Tasmania in 1984. From these humble beginnings a valuable Tasmanian industry has evolved with a worldwide reputation for having a premium disease free product. This industry provides a spin off to all anglers in the form of regular escapes of salmon from the farms.
