Macquarie River 23/09/2011

Bailey and I headed out to the Macquarie river after work today, fished from 4.30 to 6.30pm. We haven't fished here for a couple of years, thought it might be worth a look now that it has a good flow of water again after a couple of years being effected by drought conditions.

Coastal Catches 22/9/2011

There are an ever increasing number of sea runners and resident fish being caught in estuaries along the coast. Bait numbers are building up and there are fish feeding on the bait. You can try any water flowing into the sea from small creeks to large rivers. If you look closely enough for long enough you will generally be able to see signs of Trout.

Rock Lobster Review Outcomes

The new rock lobster management plan has now been released meaning new rock lobster rules apply for this recreational season which opens on Saturday, 5th November.
The main changes are the division of state fishing waters into the Eastern and Western Rock Lobster Fishing Regions and a reduced bag limit in the Eastern Region of 3 rock lobsters per day with an on-water possession limit of 6 for multiple day trips.  Other changes include new on-water boat limits and reduced possession limits for non-fishers.

OUT NOW! New Fishing Tasmania Annual Magazine

Fishing Tasmania is the ultimate Tasmanian fishing guide! It is a quality magazine that comes wrapped with a FREE informative DVD titled "How to catch Bream on lures', plus a FREE Fishing Tasmania sticker.
It retails for $10.95 and is available in newsagents throughout Australia and selected fishing tackle stores in Tasmania.
The purpose of the magazine is to attract increased participation in fishing in Tasmania for the future sustainability of the fishery. Fisheries management is funded primarily through angling license sales, so the more people that buy licenses and fishing gear, the better it is for all. We encourage you to seek out a copy of Fishing Tasmania Annual and show your support by displaying the free sticker on your car or boat.

Georges Bay, Grants Lagoon and Scamander River 14 September

We arrived at St Helens caravan park on Wednesday at 11am and was on Georges bay at noon. The wind was blowing 20 knot north westerlies with stronger gusts coming through so we launched the boat at Akaroa. We fished wherever we could get out of the wind, casting 1/8 jigheads with a wide range of soft plastics.

Lake Selina, Lake Plimsol and Reece Dam 17 September

Had the pleasure of spending the day fishing with Dale and Trev Howard and my son Bailey.
We headed off at 6.30am and arriving at Lake Selina at 10am,what a beautiful little lake, fairly shallow around the northern and western side, but deeper on the eastern shore which is better suited to casting softies from the shore.

Coastal Catches 15/09/2011

The rumour that I mentioned last week turned out to be true and if you checked the IFS website on Friday you would have seen that Lake Barrington and Brushy Lagoon were stocked with 1000 3kg Rainbow Trout in each water. There are plenty still happily swimming around waiting to be caught so it is well worth the effort to head out and try to catch one.

Cramps Bay - A True Story

President Matthew Hayes sent forward this photo taken of a fish he caught from the shore at Cramps Bay recently.
Whilst cleaning it he found no less than 5 soft plastics in it's stomach contents, three with jig heads and line still attached. He also noticed half a "black n gold t tail" with line coming out of it's vent.
As the fish was only a pound an a half in weight, it would be very doubtful that it beat five anglers, the most likely explanation we can put forward is that this brown trout was picking up soft plastics that had been previously snagged by fisherpeople, as part of it's diet.
Cramps Bay fish are reported as being very slabby at the moment so perhaps there isn't a lot of tucker about in this area?
True story!!
Regards,
President Todd.

South Esk River 11/9/2011

We fished the Sth. Esk River on Sunday afternoon with Bailey and his mate Jack Seabourne.
Fished from 1.30pm and finished around 3.30pm, river running clear and dropped to good height now. We caught 14 fish on Dale’s black and gold flappers, lost a few including “one beauty” that would have been 4lb plus.
The fish caught, went from around 1lb to 2lb and were in really good condition, fish had been feeding on stick caddis.

Redmap Project

Winter in Tasmania seems to be a time to slow down, pop on the kettle and usually in my family, share a flu or two. I like to look out of my window at the woolly weather, but clearly this is not the case for all those keen (crazy) fishers and divers out there who still have been reporting unusual fish sightings over this chilly winter period. For that the Redmap team thank you! You are the stars that make the collection of this previously unrecorded information, and the Redmap website, such a success.
