Mike Fry doesn’t only live on the Wild Side of Tasmania, but also goes fishing in probably the wildest boat ever to troll for trout—certainly in Tasmania.
When your mate says ‘What are you doing tomorrow, want to come up the Gordon for the night?’ it would be pretty hard to say anything else except “you bet” and start checking out your tackle box and packing your overnight bag. But if your mate was Troy Grining and he wanted to give his new 52ft, high speed cruiser a run across Macquarie Harbour, test the new onboard dory with a chance of landing a nice Gordon River Brown you would have to feel privileged. I didn’t say anything about getting on my hands and knees and kissing his feet…just having a lend of ya’ but I did feel very appreciative.

Day Two saw a small breeze at the start and weather was a little cooler. Team Bream It On backed up their lead with another good bag leaving them on top of the leader board with Josh Williams taking out the Cranka big Bream with a 1.520kg. Team Cranka slugged it out with no main motor all weekend and still came up with the goods, slotting them into second place with a top bag 5.670kg. Third place went to a father and son team with smiles all round for them. Another smooth and great tournament was had by all. With anglers looking forward to the final round on the Derwent River in Hobart.
Today saw the start of round 2 of The Tasmanian Bream classic 2013 held on the Swan River. Weather conditions were perfect and Swansea as always put on a beautiful day. With nearly all anglers catching a mix of big and small fish, positions after day one are tight and as a result have made way for a tightly contested day of fishing tomorrow.

The existing Shimano Saros threadline series has been re-built from the ground up, with a stylish new appearance and a heap of extra features.
Looking especially smart in a gunsmoke grey, black and metallic finish, the FA series covers all the popular small to medium reel sizes — 1000, 2500, 3000 and 4000. The new XGT7 graphite frame, rotor and sideplate cuts down weight while maintaining strength, and we have X-Ship for increased gearing efficiency and power, delivered via a zinc DC gear and a hardened brass pinion for longevity and light-touch handle rotation.

We just got home from a tuna trip down at St.Helens with my brother Steve and his partner Viv. We arrived at the ramp around 8am this morning and fished until around 1.30pm. We caught around 16 albacore and a couple of stripy tuna. Most of the hook ups came from the 100 metre mark, we did troll out to the Plateau and all we caught out there was a stripy.
The nationwide Pirtek fishing challenge competition is on again, this year it is to be held on Sunday the 24th of March right across Australia. After 32mm of rain in the Sheffield area yesterday I thought the Mersey River was worth a go this morning in humid and foggy conditions. Headed over to Weegena to have a fish upstream from the bridge. When I arrived there the river was like a mill pond as there was not a bit of wind about, and it looked perfect too. Looking upstream and downstream from the bridge I noticed the river had risen by a couple of inches plus there was not a sign of a fish on the rise either. This was a good sign for me as I thought it's going to be a top day for the spinner. I was wrong, as it was to be the opposite. Once in the water that was crystal clear and had a nice flow to it, and then after my first cast and retrieve the anti kink and the # 00 Black Aglia were fouled by the dreaded green cotton like algae that has been in the majority of the Mersey of late.
On reading the super forecast of humid, rainy and winds 10-15 knots easing back I headed to Arthurs confident of finding a good dun hatch. How wrong was I . Wind never got under 15 knots and I'm sure got up to 25 knots meaning any hatching duns got swept up and spirited km away! I fished 4 hours and only saw 2 duns. It was a matter of getting in the lee and seeing what i could conjure up.. the trusty bead head under the dry did no good so loch style it was and within minutes of changing I hooked and subsequently lost two smallish fish.

We did a bit of a runaround Tasmania’s tackle stores to see what their tips for the first month or so of the tackle season were. We asked what the top three places to fish were, plus lures, flies, baits and a few other things.
Here is a rundown on their answers Whenever, and wherever you fish - anywhere, or for any fish in the world - ask the locals and especially ask at the local tackle store. They know what was caught today, yesterday and on what.
