Many anglers are preparing for the opening of the new angling season on Saturday 7 August and it's shaping up to be another good one with the fishery in excellent health as a result of last year’s drought breaking rains. There are many great fishing locations around the State from which to choose for the opening weekend and early season fishing but here are a few suggestions.
On the 20th of August I woke up at 6:45am and realised that I had slept in for 20 minutes so I grabbed my gear and rushed over to the Pioneer Lake and set my rods out, I used 2 floats, both weighted with a red hook and a worm on each, 45 minutes later I saw my float start moving then it bobbed up and down then it took off across the surface then is stopped and went back under again.
I met up with Dale "Unit" Howard and his son Trevor at their house around 8.30ish this morning and had my son Jacob with me and after Dale picked Bailey Zanetto up on the way, we headed for Curries River Reservoir.
Upon arrival around 9.30, we observed that fellow President Warwick Medwin and his mate were already on the water fishing. We spoke to a couple of guys just getting off the water, they had a small rainbow of around a pound and a couple of browns that were a bit “underdone weight- wise”, but would still weigh in around three and a half pounds.
Derek and I went to Penstock today for a three hour practice session. We managed to land eight fish keeping five and releasing the others. The fish were all in top nick, dropped a few as well, conditions weren’t that ideal, but still paid off with some fly changes and hard work.

We headed out to Four Springs this morning with Bill Williams and one thing on my mind...redemption. I use that word, as the day before; I took him out with nothing to show for our efforts but a chill in the back, 2 missed strikes... and a straightened hook. Today was another day however.
On the 12th of the August my dad said lets go fishing so I said, "Do you want to try a new spot ", so off we went. When we got there we decided who was getting which spot. I ended up getting the spot on the bank between 2 banks of reeds and dad has a jetty also between 2 reeds banks.
On the 4th of August I walked down to the Pioneer Lake at 6.20am. When i got there it was raining so I got ready and waited for the wind to calm down a bit then i made my first cast it blew back in with in 3 minutes but I didn't give up.

My brother and I went for a fish down the lake, I was fishing off a log and I landed these 2 rainbow trout, the 1st one was 31cm & the 2nd one was 34cm. The trout were in good condition. They were my 1st trout for the season. I hope to catch a few more! (But just a bit bigger)

Looks like I am doing the report as Dale has handpassed it on to me! We fished Curries River Dam this arvo with Dale, Trev, & Bailey. We met up with them onsite around lunchtime. It was the first time here for me, but Dale has fished it a few times about 15 years ago and got some nice fish out of it on the fly.
Some photos of our two and a half hour trip at Penstock today.

I headed up to Cramps Bay (Great Lake), with my boy Jared this morning.
Left home around 6am and was on the water & fishing by around 7.15ish.
Using Yep black n gold flappers we landed 7 trout, most being browns with the exception of a lone rainbow.
We fished on along the western shore using 1/8th jig heads in around 1.5 to 2 metres of water. Retrieves were very slow,... keeping the plastic along the bottom for as long as possible.
Not much snow left up there at the moment and fish (when cleaned), were extremely pink in colour.
Regards, Mark.

During the trout off-season I tend to spend a bit of time chasing bream, to continue getting a fishing fix, and spend time tying flies and dreaming about the trout season to come. It’s a time to spend doing tackle maintenance, stocking up on lures and dreaming up new challenges and goals for the trout season ahead. When the new season comes around I usually spend the first few months targeting sea runners. Sea run trout are simply brown trout that spend much of there lives out to sea and come in to the estuaries for spawning and to feed on whitebait and the other small endemic fishes that spawn in late winter through spring. Mixed in with the silvery sea runners you can also expect to catch resident fish that have the typical dark colours of a normal brown trout as well as atlantic salmon in some of our estuaries that are located near salmon farm pens. Living in Hobart it is quick and easy to do a trip on the Huon or Derwent and is a more comfortable proposition compared to a trip up to the highlands with snow and freezing winds to contend with.
