Trout Quest - Second Edition

by David Scholes

Before David passed away, Marty Rogers and Jim Allen asked David if they could reprint Trout Quest - originally published in 1969. David readily agreed. Trout Quest has, for many years been very hard to obtain and often if a book could be found it was in poor conditon.

Swansea Flathead 29/1/2013

Hi Mike, took the kids and mate Bill to Swansea Monday 26th January. Caught plenty of flathead and was home at 2.30.

As usual the kids were hooking them two at a time and all I did was drive the boat, bait, unhook and clean.
A great day.

Big flathead caught at Eddystone Point

A very worthy catch - sent in Mark Hayes.

Spent days in the dinghy fishing in 30m of water to get a feed of flathead and this bloke gets a 3.5kg flattie while spinning from the shore with a silver wobbler for salmon at the Duck Hole!

Swan River Report 2/1/2013

Trev and I fished the lower reaches of the Swan River for a couple of hours today, the first day of 14 at Coles bay.
We caught a few bream, trevally, and small salmon, Trev landed a great bream of 37 cm on an A-TAS blade lure (this was the first time we have used these lures).

Christmas with Phil Z

Got a few pics for you to have a look at from a few days fishing with my family over the xmas break.
We fished off the Tamar Heads with Dave Smith and Mick Day looking to get onto a mako,we got a small one to the boat around 20 to 30kg. Tried to get him to eat a fly, but he just kept swimming past it. Thought for sure he would take it, but not to be. He picked up the baits that Dave and Mick had on, only to drop them after short runs, wouldn’t swallow the baits..next time.

Eddystone 30/12/2012

I was up at 1.30am picked up my mate Andrew from Lilydale and then headed to my nephews place at Pipers River, where we changed vehicles and left by 3am. No one at the ramp on arrival and we thought this could be either good or bad.
With that in mind, we launched the boat and headed to one of our stripey spots. First one “no go” so we moved to the next spot where we picked up six, so we decided to try the other spot that was close by and caught the rest. We also caught some Jackass Perch and Ocean Perch.
There was a Mako swimming around the boat about 70 kilo’s, so threw him a bait which he took, had him on for a while until the trace broke,.. so off he swam for next time.
All in all nice little trip back at the ramp by 11.30am.
Cheers Craig

Swansea Report 30/12/2012

Went to Swansea today with a couple of friends, chasing bream on lures. We arrived at 8 am to 5 knots of wind and had our first bream in the boat within 10 minutes. By the end of the day we would have caught 40 or 50.

Scamander River Report 17/11/2012

The Longford Fishing Club held a bream fishing competition on the Scamander River today. Johnny Dekkers is a member and invited Jacob and I to tag along. Although we are not members (and therefore not eligible for entry into the competition side of things), we decided we would still go along as a bit of company for John and do our own thing. Mike Stevens also found himself a late minute inclusion.

NE Breamin" 28/10/2012

We had a magnificent weekend away up the coast with the family and Johnny this weekend just gone. My wife somehow had another weekend off work (which never seems to happen) so I decided to take them away to our block up the bay. We hit the road around mid-morning Saturday and slowly made our way to the magnificent NE Coast. We was in no hurry to arrive, as the plan was to do a spot of Breaming in the afternoon and basically just relax and enjoy the weekend.

Swan River Report 25/10/2012

A mate rang me during the week and told me to try and get Thursday off for a day’s fishing. It didn't take me much to accomplish that part of the mission, so with that organised I rang back to make the plans for a trip to the Swan River. As it happened, my mate was now unable to attend this “planned outing” due to circumstances beyond his control (he is a big girlie man), so the only thing left to do was try and talk Trev into having a day off school.

Fishing around Devonport

The fishing at Devonport has been red hot the last few weeks despite the weather. A trip around town will show many people in boats and on shore fishing local waters. in the Mersey there are heaps if squid, with plenty of Salmon and Couta making a showing on the tide. Couta have been caught as far up river as Bells Pda at Latrobe. Bells Pde has also seen quite a fee Sea Runners being caught, mainly because of the incredible amounts of whitebait in the river and other local estuaries. There are few good Flathead also being caught near the mouth if the river.

East Coast Bream

Feels like years since I have posted a bit of a report, so I thought I would share a couple of recent trips Johnny and I have had to the East Coast chasing a few Bream.
Our first trip was early last week where we decided to head down for a look around to see what the Bream were up to.

Bicheno Report 5/7/2012

Mark Tapsell and I left home at 6am this morning to chase Striped Trumpeter off Bicheno.
They beat us today, but we still managed plenty of Jackass Morwong and Flathead.
The boat clocked up nearly 80 Klms .. before we found the "honey hole," where the fish were abundant.

Do you fish around Maria Island?

My name is Sarah Pendred and I am an honours student from the Australian Maritime College. I am currently researching the application of stakeholder preferences in the management of the Maria Island Marine Nature Reserve. I will be looking at preferences of 4 groups of stakeholders; researchers, fishers, managers and environmental NGOs.

Eddystone Point 12/6/12

I am passing on a report from Danny Jacobs who fished out of Eddystone point on the weekend with Josh Hammersley and his daughter Chloe on the boat Hammerhead.
Also fishing with them was Shaun and crew aboard Master Baiter and Jason and his crew aboard Predator.

Bicheno Report 11/06/2012

With the promise of very little wind and swell, Mike Stevens, Bailey & Phil Zanetto, along with myself, headed out to Bicheno early this morning (6am) with the aim of targeting a few striped trumpeter.

 Bicheno Striped Trumpeter

President Danny Jacobs, from Tamar Marine, recently had a striped trumpeter trip out of Bicheno with his mates Fitzy and Jason Fulton. Leaving  home at 5am to arrive at Bicheno at 7am, they headed up to Seymour and had been fishing five minutes when Jason caught his first ever Stripie.

East Coast Report

May is the beginning of the slower winter period for Tasmanian waters however there is still some great fishing on offer. With April seeing the end of the Brown Trout season for most Tasmanian waters its time to turn to the Rainbow fisheries that are still available to fish until the end of May. These waters include Dee Lagoon, Lagoon of Islands, Lake Rowallan, Lake Skinner, Mersey River above Lake Rowallan, Upper Mersey Lakes and the upstream sections of the two Weld Rivers. This time of year deep trolling with lead line is the preferred method for the lakes and still the possibility of fish on the dry fly in the North East stream.

Moorlands Beach

We fished Moorlands Beach on Sunday fishing from 10am till 6pm finding it a tough day, coming off a week of daddy day care I was up for a challenge and took the strong northerly on it's stride only to land 1 flat head at 2pm of 29cm.  Fishing beside a gutter I kept my hopes high as the tide started to rise a bit and my burley  trial started to bring in the fish.

Weymouth Easter 2012

We were invited to Weymouth for a couple of days over the Easter break to stay at a friend’s shack. The plan was to go after some flathead on the first day and a Mako the next. We arrived about lunch time on Friday and got the gear ready.

Bicheno Report

Went after a few tuna off the coast at Bicheno  today, had a great day out in the salt for a change, boating over twenty albacore with a couple of mates along with a good feed of quality flathead. The weather was quite good with a slight south east wind blowing but also quite bright but all in all just a great day with plenty of action....catch up soon.
