Over Head Fishing Reel Maintenance

Introduction
Correctly maintaining your overhead fishing reel and performing the appropriate servicing procedures is of prime importance to all anglers regardless of the overhead reel's application. A well maintained overhead reel performs at its optimum level, increases casting distance, lowers the minimum cast weight and assists the angler by operating without a fault whilst fishing, having a smooth drag with a light initial let off to respond to a sudden run from a hooked fish.

Fishing Bruny Island Part 1 Trout and Bream fishing

Introduction

Bruny Island is an island off the South East Coast of Tasmania. It is situated around 40 minutes South of Hobart and is accessed from Kettering via the Mirambeena vehicle ferry. Bruny Island features the most southern hotel in Australia and was also where the first apples in Australia were planted. It has very little habitation with the bulk of the island being forestry areas or national parks and farms. The coast line is dotted with shacks and there are a few small residential areas.  It has beautiful beaches and exceptional surfing at Cloudy Bay.

The Burley Factor

Cast your mind back to the last time you were wandering down the street and this wonderful aroma caught your attention as you passed the local bakery. Your mouth starts to water and you are tempted to go straight in there and buy some of that delicious freshly baked bread - you have in fact just been burleyed!

Tamar Shore Fishing For Kids

As a youngster I was fortunate enough to have a Grandad " The late Ben Sherriff" who would take me fishing once a week. Every Saturday evening he would take me to the Hillwood jetty which unfortunately burnt down some years ago. I used to live for Saturdays. I would get so excited. We wouldn't catch much but we didn't care.  It was the atmosphere, the anticipation of the catch and the other anglers that we would meet  that made it so special to me.  Sadly my Grandad passed away in 1983. I still miss him very much but he has given me a gift that I will treasure for the rest of my life. Fishing.

Spoon-fed.

Splash disguised by a small cascade and landing just upstream of a deeper hole overhung by blackberries, this was a rare perfect cast. As the lure wobbled its way through the shadows a bow wave tracking to intercept indicated interest. A brief pause at the shadow's edge resulted in a solid tug on the line and with a swirling splash, I was on. After a couple of jumps and short runs, a pretty little brown trout was quickly slid up on the wet grass for a quick measure, photo, de-hook and release. At 43.5cm fork length and over a pound and a half in weight, this was a large fish for such small water with the deeply hooked jaw of a mature male trout. This brought my total for the day (about an hours fishing just 20min from home) to three landed and with several others missed or dropped, was a fitting end for a quick post work fish. As with all previous fish, that day along with many from previous and subsequent trips the successful lure was a simple small metal spoon one of the most underrated lures in our hi-tech modern fishing society.

Drogues Slow down and catch more fish.

History
When I first started guiding 13 seasons ago our business was entirely lake based. The highland lakes of Tasmania are well know for windy personas. The wiser, more experienced local anglers all used drogues to slow their boats so I purchased the biggest drogue I could find. It was the conventional windsock type of design and was a flouro yellow colour.

Targeting Bream with Soft Plastics

Introduction
In the last ten years or so, the humble bream has turned from a bread and butter species that was predominantly targeted by anglers using baits such as shrimp, prawns, crabs, bass yabbies/nippers, blood worms, sand worms, etc, into a highly prized sports fish that is now being targeted with great success by anglers using lure and fly.

Targeting Lake Trout with Soft Plastics

Steve Steer
Introduction: In August 2003 I fulfilled one of my life long goals, to move from suburban Melbourne to the greener fishing pastures of Tasmania. I had been traveling to Tasmania since I was 12 years old on holidays and had spent many hours over the years chasing one of my favorite species, the wily Tasmanian trout. Having been a soft plastic lure fanatic for many years and now only living 10 minutes from some of the best trout waters in the world, has given me the incentive to refine my skills at catching this species with soft lures. What follows is a detailed description of the rigs and techniques that I have found to be extremely successful when targeting trout in Tasmanian lakes.

West of the Western Lakes

The Oxford dictionary defines the word "sublime"  as "so impressive as to inspire awe or wonder" . And if there ever was one perfect setting that fits this definition it was Lake Meston in late October.  Situated south of Lake Rowallan weather in this region can be iffy but we managed to plan our three day trip perfectly. Whilst there was substantial snow cover on the Overland Track and Walls of Jerusalem peaks, Lake Meston, nestled in-between was almost tropical! Well that might be taking things too far but it was mild, calm conditions and I reckon if there really is a Garden of Eden then this was pretty close to it!

Cheap Thrills.

Have you ever been stuck on shore with a salmon school turning the water to foam or rising trout just beyond casting distance? Maybe wondered about the fish hanging on the weed beds beyond your reach or in that inaccessible stretch of un-wadeably deep river protected by dense bankside willows? Can't afford a boat, nowhere to store it, don't want the hassle or the need for a bigger car just to tow it? A solution is at hand. Get yourself a kayak.
