Coastal Catches 21/06/2012

I read an interesting article written by Greg French in the current issue of Freshwater Fishing concerning Trout growth and fisheries management. The article points out where there is ample or an abundance of food trout will do well and where food is scarce they will struggle. Fisheries management, (Water level and water quality) has a big influence on the ecology of lakes and in turn how much food is available.  It is a well written story and well worth a read.

Closed season and options

During the first week of June Inland Fisheries Compliance staff booked two anglers for fishing in a closed water, one at Four Springs Lake and one at Brumbys Creek. Anglers are reminded that most inland waters remain closed until 4 August 2012. There are however quite a few options for those who wish to get their fix of winter fishing. Eight lakes remain open; Great Lake, Lake Burbury, Craigbourne Dam, Lake Barrington, Meadowbank Lake, Brushy Lagoon, Lake Pedder and Huntsman Lake.

New launching area for Lake Mackintosh

In response to concerns from the angling community regarding safe launching and retrieval of boats in southerly or south – westerly weather MAST has provided funding to upgrade the boat ramp at Lake Mackintosh.
Various proposals have been considered and a site meeting was held in May 2012 with representatives from Hydro, MAST, IFS and local anglers to explore all the options.

Little Pine Lagoon Car Park Improvements

As part of ongoing investment in infrastructure at popular waters IFS has recently upgraded the car park at the Little Pine Lagoon dam wall.
Little Pine Lagoon is arguably Tasmania’s premier fly fishing water and is currently the 5th most popular lake fishery in the state based on angler numbers and effort. The parking area is well patronised by anglers fishing the Untouchables Shore and Western Shores of the lagoon.

Good news for River Derwent Anglers

Anglers and boaters alike will be pleased with recent improvements to the popular Prince of Wales Boat Ramp off Gepp Parade. Jointly funded by MAST and the Glenorchy City Council the works included resurfacing and upgrading the ramp to the recommended gradient of 1:8 which will allow for all tide use. Users will also enjoy the addition of a pontoon system which will significantly aid launching and retrieving of vessels, not to mention the boarding of passengers etc.
