Bicheno Report 5/7/2012

Mark Tapsell and I left home at 6am this morning to chase Striped Trumpeter off Bicheno.
They beat us today, but we still managed plenty of Jackass Morwong and Flathead.
The boat clocked up nearly 80 Klms .. before we found the "honey hole," where the fish were abundant.

RISE - Fly Fishing Film Festival 2012

In its 7th year, RISE is on a mission to celebrate the diverse world of fly fishing, to connect anglers through shared experience, and to create public awareness of fly fishing's new dynamic emergence. The festival allows the fishing community to share their passion for the sport by attending film screenings across the country. It's the biggest kick-off to the fishing season there is!

Trout Weekend, Liawenee 2012

The annual Trout Weekend at Liawenee held on the Saturday and Sunday the 19th and 20th of May was as popular as ever this year, with over 4,000 people braving the keen highland weather over the two days to enjoy a range of different attractions that make this event a must-see on the Tasmanian angling calendar.

The updated Hydro Tasmania lake levels page

The lake levels published by Hydro Tasmania have always been of interest to anglers as a guide to how well lakes may be fishing. Fluctuations in levels often have a direct influence over the behaviour of trout. A lake's level at the time of fishing can have a bearing on where anglers can fish and safely navigate on some lakes.

Do you fish around Maria Island?

My name is Sarah Pendred and I am an honours student from the Australian Maritime College. I am currently researching the application of stakeholder preferences in the management of the Maria Island Marine Nature Reserve. I will be looking at preferences of 4 groups of stakeholders; researchers, fishers, managers and environmental NGOs.

Coastal Catches 28/6/2012

There has been a lot of discussion among our customers in recent weeks with regard to the Super Trawler M V Margiris fishing in commonwealth waters targeting Red Bait and Jack Mackeral. This is fishing on an industrialised scale and to put the size of the vessel into perspective it is 142m long compared to the Spirit of Tasmania at 194m long. This factory trawler is huge and it stands accused of leaving collapsed fisheries and unemployed fishermen in its wake.

Hi, Mike - I am writing to seek your assistance with the campaign to stop the FV Margiris from plundering Australian fisheries. I am aware that there is an excellent online petition being circulated but some people don't use the Internet and a paper-based petition may add more weight to this argument.
The link to the paper-based petition is http://www.stopthemargiris.net
The idea is that people can print these and circulate these through fishing and other retail outlets.
I would be very grateful for any assistance that you can give.
Thanks & Regards

Huntsman Lake Report 23/6/2012

Here's a report on a couple of hours at the Huntsman on Saturday afternoon. You could say it was a bit cool, but that's fishing for this time of year.
Arrived out there 3.30 fished till dark (5.30) landed 6 browns, keeping 3 for in-laws and released the rest.

Lake Leake Christmas 2011

Just before Christmas last year, my brother (10), sister (15) and I (14) went out on Lake Leake fishing. We weren’t out on the water for more than 5 minutes; Connor hooked a small brown, then Gracie-mae but both under size.  Not long after that I hooked something that felt like a log, it was pulling like a freight train!! When we got it up to the side of the boat, it was monster red fin perch!!  We got it in the boat measured and weighed in at 45cm, 2.7pounds, it was a whopper.
