Oral History Association of Australia

The Tasmanian Committee of the Oral History Association of Australia will hold a seminar on Saturday, 7th September, featuring a couple of items that might be of interest to the wider fishing community.  One speaker is Neil Stump on the oral history project for the Tasmanian Seafood Industry Council and another is Garry Kerr, a fisherman by profession and historian by inclination.  He has produced DVDs, especially on the Flinders Island traders, and is interested in wooden boats.

We are trying to publicise the seminar to get people who might be interested to attend.  It is not expensive, $30 for the day, including lunch.  I am attaching a programme for the day.

Here is the agenda

Here is a press release.
Calling all people interested in oral fishing history.  The Tasmanian Branch of the Oral History Assn. of Australia is holding a seminar on Saturday, 7th September, from 10.30-3:30 p.m. at the meeting room, Queen Vicoria Museum and Art Gallery, Inveresk.  Neil Stump, Chief Executive, of the Tasmanian Seafood Industry Council, will tell about its oral history project commenced in 2012.  Commercial fishing from 19th C whaling to ever-expanding salmon aquaculture has made its mark on the industry.  Much is undocumented but remains in the minds of old time fishers.  Their stories beckon.  Another speaker will be Garry Kerr, a fisherman by profession and historian by inclination.  He has compiled Oral Histories on Film.  Three of these have been on Tasmanian subjects: Trading out of Hobart, Crayfishing around Tasmania and Wooden ships and stockmen, about Flinders Island and some of its people.Registration is essential:  $30 for non-members, including lunch.
