New Year Stocking Update

With surplus fish stock available – from its own and some of the commercial hatcheries – the Service has been kept busy stocking both public and private waters since the New Year. This intensity is likely to continue over the following weeks as part of the annual stocking program set out in the Tasmanian Inland Recreational Fishery Management Plan 2008-18.

Craigbourne Dam received a large stocking last week of 2,000 Atlantic salmon (with a minimum weight of 700 g) donated by Saltas, adding to 300 trophy sized (3 kg) salmon released before Christmas. A further stocking of 900 adult rainbow trout weighing around 500 g donated by Petuna Aquaculture was undertaken this week, and a repeat stocking of surplus adult fish is likely within days. The water levels are high and clear – there is no sign of algae so far this summer – and with an abundance of catchable fish, Craigbourne Dam should be well worth a visit over the coming weeks.
The Service has also been grading, sorting and clearing its juvenile wild fish stocks to allow for increased production over the next few months. Bradys Lake received 15,000 diploid brown trout fingerling at around 20 g and Lake Meadowbank received 60,000 diploid rainbow trout fry of less than one gram.  
Lake Plimsoll, which is a brook trout fishery along with Lake Rolleston, Lake Selina and Clarence Lagoon, was stocked with 300 adult brook trout weighing around 500 g. These fish were donated by Snowy Range Fishery.
Ten thousand domestic triploid rainbow trout fingerling (weighing around 20 g) were stocked into Lake Leake and Lake Dulverton, and 14,000 went into Brushy Lagoon. These fish were donated by Petuna Aquaculture from this year’s surplus production.
