Rock lobster - transiting seasonally closed areas

A reminder to recreational fishers that you cannot possess pots, rings or rock lobster in any part of the East Coast Stock Rebuilding Zone (ECSRZ) during the closed season for that area. This includes the D'Entrecasteaux Channel, and waters between St Helens and Eddystone Point - see maps below for boundaries. The ECSRZ boundary line at Eddystone Point is through the lighthouse at 40° 59' 35" S.

Due to high numbers of recreational fishers and the need for effective policing, there are no transiting provisions in place for the recreational fishery.

Gamefish survey

The Institute for Marine and Antarctic Studies (IMAS) is undertaking a national survey to better understand recreational fishing for gamefish species.

Recreational boat owners may be contacted by a private research company on behalf of Marine and Safety Tasmania asking permission for their contact details to be provided to IMAS to source participants.

The Tasmanian component of the survey is gathering information about tuna, shark, striped trumpeter, blue eye trevalla and other deepwater species. IMAS staff will also be present at some boat ramps to interview fishers.
