Coastal Catches 31/5/2012

There are only a few days to go until all the Rainbow designated waters will close for the end of the season. There are still a number of waters open all year round and these will provide the diehard freshwater anglers with their fix while the other waters are closed. We often get asked why there is a closed season.

It is to allow trout to spawn in peace and not be disturbed, thus ensuring good natural recruitment for our lakes and rivers with wild trout.
There have been quite a few anglers targeting Atlantic Salmon at Lake Barrington and Brushy Lagoon. They were released a couple of weeks ago and there are still plenty to be caught. Both of these waters are open all year round.Australian Salmon are a favourite target for many coastal anglers. Sinking Rock and Netley Bay are popular destinations.
The Stanley area is another place that is worthwhile trying. There are also plenty of good spots from Burnie to Port Sorell. The Ulverstone breakwall is a great place to try as it is easily accessible and a good place to take kids as long as they are under supervision. Soft plastics work well as do metal slice lures. Bait is another option but the current near the mouth can make things challenging so you are better fishing further into the river.
There are still plenty of Bluefin Tuna being caught at Eaglehawk Neck and further south at Bruny Island and Pedra Branca. If you get a chance it’s well worth the effort to organise a charter. All you need is a few mates, a few dollars and a free weekend. All the gear is supplied so all you have to is get yourselves down there. There was a 100kg fish caught there on Tuesday so the big fish are still there.
We have a free offer this week for Coastal Catches readers. We have obtained some Fishing World DVD’s from Rapala Australia and they cover many different sorts of fishing from Trout to Bluefin call in and pick one up.

Gadget of the week.
Suffex Duraflex Monofilament Fishing Line.
The great benefit this line has over others is that it is considerably thinner than other lines for the same breaking strain. For example Suffex Duraflex 23.8lb line has the same diameter as standard 14lb line. This adds distance to your cast. A great line for places like Sinking Rock. Available from Tassie Tackle and Outdoor.
