Flathead Fly fishing tips and tactics

Before we start the following is just a guide to get you started. Don't use the concepts presented here as absolutes, mold them to suit your needs, skill level and equipment.

The key to a catching a flathead is understanding their habits. Most predators in this world hunt their food. They head out into their marked territory and find their prey, stalking their prey and then attacking at the opportune time. Alternatively a few predators wait for the game to come to them, one such predator is the Flathead.

Downrigger fishing

Downrigger fishing is a method almost exclusively associated with trolling at depth. In depths of water from 1 - 200 metres a separate braided stainless steel wire line and weight take your bait or lure to your desired depth. When a fish hits your bait, your line is released and you fight the fish on your rod and reel, with no heavy line or weight to battle. Downrigging while trolling is without doubt the most accurate way of presenting a lure or bait at depth, but there is no reason why this technique can’t be employed for other fishing methods.

Sabiki Rigs

When I am not fishing for big snapper, most of the time I am fishing for trevally, mullet, tailor and salmon.  

One of the best ways of catching these species is to use a Sabiki rig. A Sabiki rig is a basic paternoster rig with a team of attractor flies and sometimes a sliding lumo bead.
It is a truly deadly way to catch small to medium sized fish.

Pontoon Fishing in the Tamar

As most of you would probably know, I love fishing the Tamar.  Unfortunately, lately, due to work and family commitments, I don't have quite as much time to fish but, after work,  when time allows, one thing I really do enjoy is fishing the new Tamar pontoons.  The pontoons are placed at intervals right along the estuary.  In this article, I am going to run through the Tamar pontoons and give you some general information on the species you may catch, techniques, bait, peak times, tides and modern rigs all of which may make the difference between no fish and a fine brace.

Tidal Talk December 2001

I think I've mentioned before that I went to New Zealand last year to look at their fishery management and to talk about communication. I remember expressing my surprise at the discovery there are no flathead in new Zealand .....but they do have snapper and blue cod.

Huon Streams

While the Huon River itself is a fantastic fishery during springtime whitebait migrations, the smaller tributary streams are also well worthwhile.  Suitable waters can be found all along the eastern side of the middle to lower Huon.  The fish caught in these streams are usually small - really quite diminutive when compared to their lake inhabiting counterparts, but how often have you ever caught 50 fish a day in any of our lakes.
