Rock Lobster discussion paper

Government plans to reduce recreational rock lobster catch Tasmanian fisheries managers have determined the Tasmanian rock lobster fishery is over fished. Around 92.5% of rock lobster taken is by commercial fishers and the remainder by recreational methods. The Government plans to reduce the daily recreational bag limit from 5 to 4, despite the recreational share NEVER having reached its limit. Please read the attached and if you are a recreational rock lobster fisher make sure you attend one of the meetings. The dates are in the attached paper. We will put up some of the important points and further opinions here before these meetings start.

Lake Ada Report 17 April 2010 Had a day fishing some lakes a couple of hours walk from Ada on Saturday. The weather was magnificent and if you had said it felt like the middle of February you wouldn`t have doubted it. Its a good time to catch better than average fish with big browns looking to put on some weight ready for spawning.

Four Springs report 18th April 2010

Eddy and I went out this Sunday 18 April to Four Springs and it was well worth the trip.

Left home around 0620am and ran into thick fog from Esk Farm to the lake. On the water a little after 700am with low visibility due thick fog, which hung around until 1000am. It was calm, mild on the water and nothing rising. We cruised around for about 1 hour before we had a strike. Selwyn had a nice hefty rainbow on; after a few minutes it was in the net. A Tassie Devil 47 was the taker. Continued on and Sel soon had another one on; this time a brownie in top condition on a black and gold 4x with red spots.

Last weekend a few ANSA (Australian National Sportfishing Assoc.) members had a trip to North West Bay, south of Hobart and it absolutely went off. The short visit saw large Australian salmon 500mm plus, tailor and pick-axe couta all taken on silver slice Halco lures. The action was so fast with the Tailor and Salmon chasing pilchards in bait ball and couta flashing under the main school nailing anything that strayed from the safety of the mass that triple hook ups were the rule.

Draft Boating Infrastructure Plan released for Comment

Marine and Safety Tasmania (MAST), Hydro and IFS have recently conducted an audit and inspection of boating facilities on Tasmania’s lakes and lagoons. From this process a Draft Boating Infrastructure Plan has been developed giving details of each location and recommendations for future maintenance and development. The Plan, which will guide the three organisations in respect of funding priorities for boating facilities into the future, is available for comment until 30 May 2010 by recreational boaters.

Supporting Australia’s recreational fishing industry

Minister for Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry Tony Burke released on Wednesday the 31st of March 2010, a draft discussion paper to help shape the future of the recreational fishing industry in Australia.

Southern Bluefin Tuna Report

Although water temperatures are still high, the bluefin have turned up in large numbers at Eaglehawk Neck as well as catches reported over recent days out of Southport. Most fish have been in the 15 - 30 Kg range with the odd larger fish being taken. Yesterday at Tasman Island anglers were getting double hook ups with both Bluefin & Striped Tuna at the same time!!
Although the number of Albacore being caught has slowed down some at The Neck, the size has increased with fish to 18Kg being landed. Further north off Maria Island there are still large numbers of Albacore and Striped Tuna being taken but no reports to date of Bluefin.
Once again the Meridian "Brown Dog", Green Lumo & Pink Bonito have been the stand out lures for this season so far.

Fishing Report St Helens 20 03 2010

Travis, Jamie and his son Patrick (in one boat ) and Dale, his son Trevor, myself and daughter Demi (in another), made our way to St Helens this morning seeking Kingfish and Albacore Tuna.

Demi was very excited as she had always wanted to have a go at this type of fishing, but up until now was always told to stay at home as I feared that the heavy sea's would make her sick .

My thinking was it's a long day watching your daughter being sick over the side, (especially when I' ve been there myself on a couple of occasions!!!.)

Beaumaris Report 13 03 2010

I fish on Beaumaris Beach near Shelley Point. The last 2 times I fished I caught a big flat head, some mullet, 4 bream, some salmon and 3 trevally.
I was using cocktail prawns for bait. These fish are there most of the time and I used a small river rod.
My brother and nephew came down on Tuesday night and they caught 4 sharks and 1 gurnard so the fish are there its just a matter of knowing where to go.
If I told you exactly I would have to kill you!
