A Work Out for a New Rod

A couple of days ago I went and purchased a new rod for spinning, a 1 to 3 kg starlo stix from Bridges Brothers.

I thought I might give it a whirl so I headed down to the Huon River about a kilometre down from Jubury Park.

I started spinning with a 3 inch Berkley minnow grub in pumpkinseed hoping to hook up on a 1 or 2 pound brownie but I got something a little bigger!
I was casting into the calm below the rapids, on my third cast something struck! My drag started screaming and my rod bent in half.
I followed it down the rapids and into a eddy and played with it for another 20 minutes and then with a little struggle landed it.
It was a 2.5 kg atlantic salmon. I headed back to the spot and on the sixth cast another screaming drag and arching rod, this one took a little longer to land but it was 3.8 kg.
That was write a work out for my new rod and me and I was very impressed with how it handled. The hook fared worst but still landed the fish.
