Eddystone 30/12/2012

I was up at 1.30am picked up my mate Andrew from Lilydale and then headed to my nephews place at Pipers River, where we changed vehicles and left by 3am. No one at the ramp on arrival and we thought this could be either good or bad.
With that in mind, we launched the boat and headed to one of our stripey spots. First one “no go” so we moved to the next spot where we picked up six, so we decided to try the other spot that was close by and caught the rest. We also caught some Jackass Perch and Ocean Perch.
There was a Mako swimming around the boat about 70 kilo’s, so threw him a bait which he took, had him on for a while until the trace broke,.. so off he swam for next time.
All in all nice little trip back at the ramp by 11.30am.

Swansea Report 30/12/2012

Went to Swansea today with a couple of friends, chasing bream on lures. We arrived at 8 am to 5 knots of wind and had our first bream in the boat within 10 minutes. By the end of the day we would have caught 40 or 50.

Scamander River Report 17/11/2012

The Longford Fishing Club held a bream fishing competition on the Scamander River today. Johnny Dekkers is a member and invited Jacob and I to tag along. Although we are not members (and therefore not eligible for entry into the competition side of things), we decided we would still go along as a bit of company for John and do our own thing. Mike Stevens also found himself a late minute inclusion.

Swan River Report 25/10/2012

A mate rang me during the week and told me to try and get Thursday off for a day’s fishing. It didn't take me much to accomplish that part of the mission, so with that organised I rang back to make the plans for a trip to the Swan River. As it happened, my mate was now unable to attend this “planned outing” due to circumstances beyond his control (he is a big girlie man), so the only thing left to do was try and talk Trev into having a day off school.

Bicheno Report 5/7/2012

Mark Tapsell and I left home at 6am this morning to chase Striped Trumpeter off Bicheno.
They beat us today, but we still managed plenty of Jackass Morwong and Flathead.
The boat clocked up nearly 80 Klms .. before we found the "honey hole," where the fish were abundant.

Do you fish around Maria Island?

My name is Sarah Pendred and I am an honours student from the Australian Maritime College. I am currently researching the application of stakeholder preferences in the management of the Maria Island Marine Nature Reserve. I will be looking at preferences of 4 groups of stakeholders; researchers, fishers, managers and environmental NGOs.

Eddystone Point 12/6/12

I am passing on a report from Danny Jacobs who fished out of Eddystone point on the weekend with Josh Hammersley and his daughter Chloe on the boat Hammerhead.
Also fishing with them was Shaun and crew aboard Master Baiter and Jason and his crew aboard Predator.

Bicheno Report 11/06/2012

With the promise of very little wind and swell, Mike Stevens, Bailey & Phil Zanetto, along with myself, headed out to Bicheno early this morning (6am) with the aim of targeting a few striped trumpeter.

 Bicheno Striped Trumpeter

President Danny Jacobs, from Tamar Marine, recently had a striped trumpeter trip out of Bicheno with his mates Fitzy and Jason Fulton. Leaving  home at 5am to arrive at Bicheno at 7am, they headed up to Seymour and had been fishing five minutes when Jason caught his first ever Stripie.

East Coast Report

May is the beginning of the slower winter period for Tasmanian waters however there is still some great fishing on offer. With April seeing the end of the Brown Trout season for most Tasmanian waters its time to turn to the Rainbow fisheries that are still available to fish until the end of May. These waters include Dee Lagoon, Lagoon of Islands, Lake Rowallan, Lake Skinner, Mersey River above Lake Rowallan, Upper Mersey Lakes and the upstream sections of the two Weld Rivers. This time of year deep trolling with lead line is the preferred method for the lakes and still the possibility of fish on the dry fly in the North East stream.

Weymouth Easter 2012

We were invited to Weymouth for a couple of days over the Easter break to stay at a friend’s shack. The plan was to go after some flathead on the first day and a Mako the next. We arrived about lunch time on Friday and got the gear ready.

Tiny creeks and sea run trout - Christopher Bassano

Christopher Bassano fishes over 250 days a year. This interview was recorded just before he headed off to fish for Australia in the World Fly Fishing Championships in Norway 14-17 August 2013.

I live on a small stream and at the start of the season I like to go off on a bit of a discovery mission and fish the headwaters of the creeks and rivers I feel an affinity with.

These small rivers include the St Pats, Meander, Forester, Little Forester and others. The further up you go on these rivers the clearer and lower the levels. They are often less affected by the rain and runoff and you get some good opportunities. Get as close to the source as you can and you will find some good dry fly fishing. Don’t limit yourself to those I have mentioned. Most headwaters will hold trout.
