Have you tried whitebait fishing?

With favourable conditions, this season is looking like a great whitebait season.
The 2016 whitebait season opens for fishing on Saturday October 1 and remains open till Friday 11 November 2016.

The season is open on the following waters:

  • Duck River (except 50 m above or below the weir).
  • Great Forester River
  • Henty River
  • Huon River
  • Inglis River
  • Mersey River
  • Montagu River
  • Pieman River
  • River Derwent
  • River Forth
  • kanamaluka/River Tamar (including Trevallyn Tailrace), and
  • Rubicon River (except 50 m above or below the weir)

The daily catch limit 2 kg but the total season catch limit is 10 kg and the maximum possession limit is 10 kg.

Whitebait can only be taken between the hours from sunrise to sunset.

To fish for whitebait you must purchase a whitebait season licence* which cost $30.50 and can be bought online by clicking the "Pay Now" button (located on the left side of this email), at Service Tasmania shops or selected tackle stores.

*Children 10 years and over must have a licence to fish for whitebait. Children under 10 are not permitted to fish for whitebait.

Whitebait fishers are reminded to exercise extra caution around flood affected river estuaries, especially the Inglis, Mersey and Forth rivers. Undercut banks, piles of debris and logs and significant changes to river banks and flows are likely to be encountered.

Please be mindful that landowners are still recovering from the floods and new fences and gates are being built. Please respect any directions from landowners, warnings and closed signs.
