Coastal Catches 19/4/2001

Every now and again a little gem appears. A few weeks ago a customer arrived in the shop with an old fishing rod inquiring about its age and how to go about restoring it. He had found it on a trailer destined for the tip. It was an old rod made of wood and was in poor condition however all the fittings were original. The customer came back in this week with his fully restored rod and he had done a magnificent job of restoring it. All the brass was gleaming, new bindings and a coat of varnish. He had also researched how old it might be and found that it was pre 1880. He also had another rod that he was in the process of restoring that his mate had found in Hobart also destined for the tip. It just goes to show that one man’s trash is another’s treasure.
Eaglehawk neck is fishing very well at the moment. There have been some big Bluefin caught there in the past week and things are looking good for the competition that is on this weekend. Our mail is that Meridian Saltshakers and Demons have been working well in the small to medium sizes.
Australian Salmon are still around in good numbers. One customer has a great time last weekend and caught some good fish in the Blythe Heads area. We also had some reports of Salmon in the Penguin area. I saw a boat very close to the shore on the eastern side of Blinking Billy last week and they were catching Salmon and they would have been an easy cast for any land based angler.
Four Springs is well worth a visit as there are some magnificent fish just waiting to be caught. One of the boy’s from the shop was down there with his mate on Sunday and they caught fish in the 5lb area and lost a monster. (The big ones always get away). Rapalas were the order of the day with Spotted Dog and Gold being the standout lures.
