Return to Rowallan

It had been over 16 years since I last fished Lake Rowallan. As a young man growing up in the rural community of Deloraine, it was a lake reasonably close to home and where I spent many a night camped on its shorelines. My last trip there was 14 December 1994. I remember this as I have a picture of a 14 pound brown trout on my lounge room wall with that date on the plaque. It is my biggest ever trout and the memories of that catch remain with me as if it were yesterday. To see a fish of that size come out of Rowallan’s light tannin coloured depths was something I will never forget but as I was a bit of a “scallywag” in those days, and I won’t elaborate on that, it was a reward that to this day…. I hardly felt that I had earn’t. Many things have changed since then, the most notable is the outlook and respect I now possess for our fisheries and those charged with looking after them. Anyway, with this all in mind, I decided to hook on the trailer, grab a couple of mates and head back for a day’s fishing at a lake that I seemed to have forgotten about . Why it’s been so long between drinks I cannot answer, perhaps it’s just another one of those lakes that are largely forgotten about… and I don’t know why. It is a lake close to many of our major population areas, yet seems to fly under the radar of most of the State’s freshwater anglers. In fact I would go so far as to say that many wouldn’t even know where it is. It is well stocked, has some absolute monsters in it and is very easily accessed, especially to those living in Tasmania’s North and North West. You hardly ever hear of any fishing reports coming from it and those that do fish it on a regular basis seem to like to keep it that way.

Blackmans ​Lagoon

I headed to Tomahawk on the weekend, and decided to have a fish in Blackmans ​Lagoon on the way down. Arrived at around 1:30ish and got my 3​ ​metr​e​ ​Zodiac off my 4wd with my 2 hp Johnston and headed off, the weather was very bright with 10 knot winds decided to try a Yep golden seducer around the edges. Bang had my first fish on and had this trout on for 15 mins and wasn't sure if it was a brown or a rainbow, but it was a good fish. Got it within 5 metres of the boat and saw the fish and know straight away that's it a really nice fish and could of easily be double figures, but then the hook pulled... Damn!! Kept on fishing for another 30 mins and hooked up a nice rainbow around the 4lb mark and was a very nice solid fish.

Bronte Lagoon

Arrived at Bronte this afternoon, great day, the fish are on the chew netted 3 dropped 4 and put 2 back . Strong, and all in good nick. All spin drifting, black and red Kandles.

Curries River Dam 15/9/2013

Trev and I made the last minute decision to head down to Curries River Dam for a fish and to try out the new yep rainbow trout hard lure. We arrived at 3.00 pm and fished for a couple of hours. The new lure colour didn't let us down it took no time to get the first fish in the boat. This fishery will get a fair flogging from us this season as it never lets us down and has strong hard fighting fish. We also saw one take a dunn.

Curries River Lake

We had a trip to Curries River Lake today with Dale & Trev Howard. Dale picked me up around 10.30am and we arrived there about 11.15am. No one else was there which was good so we had the lake to ourselves. We headed off to the south east corner where the small river enters the lake, things were quiet early, but we picked up plenty of fish on the sounder and they seemed to be hugging the bottom.

Has Parks and Wildlife Service ABANDONED THE CENTRAL PLATEAU?

With the recent closure of the Liawenee Field Station and transfer of Plateau management to Mole Creek, one might very well ask this question.  For the first time in many decades, there is no Ranger present or Parks and Wildlife Service representation on the Central Plateau.

Outback Troutin'

A late spur of the moment decision found me out West yesterday for a spot of dry fly action.
I decided to join the boys for a wander into a lake I haven't fished in years for a look. As it had been years since I had fished it I was very eager to get in there. The plan was to meet the others at Liawenee at around 5am as they were heading up from Hobart. I couldn't sleep Friday night so I headed up around 11pm and thought I'd get a coupla hours kip in the bus before they arrived. This never happened as I found myself just driving around the highlands to see how much wildlife I could spot under the moonlit sky!

Little Gem

My first effective fishing trip since I ventured to Tassie for the opening season in August , saw me head off to explore a recently discovered little gem  out in the  Victorian goldfields. I discovered this little reservoir on a recent weekend away. I had heard of it but had never seen it let alone fished it. It is a little expanse of water worthy of inclusion amongst many of my favourite Tassie waters.. With its undulating country side vista and its relatively clear waters, the prospects seem good based on the visuals. I went up on the Saturday afternoon for hope of catching and evening rise. Alas there was no surface movement and after speaking to a regular that was just coming of the water, there was not much action under the water either.

Curries River Dam 22/10/2012

Went to Curries River Dam for 9am Sunday at the Dam wall.  I was using Chunky Cheese power bait and caught this beauty in 15 mins.  The weather was quite windy so fly fishing was very difficult.  But if you were a fly fisher, then today would have been great.  Fish were rising until 10:30am.  Then nothing.

Sea Run Trout

Mid Sea-Run Season Report


Sea-run trout fishing this year got off to a cracking start in most areas, with the majority of anglers employing nearly every trout fishing technique to secure fish in local estuaries statewide.
Even those anglers fishing the "off-season" lower down in our estuaries for sea-trout commented on the number of fish moving in early August.
