Recreational Net Fishing Ban

Hi, as many will know Tasmania has the most outdated rules in regard to recreational netting in Australia. We would like to change that. As has been clearly demonstrated - any area from which nets have been removed the fishing has improved. We all want fishing to improve. Supporting a recreational netting ban will do that. The Scalefish Plan review which is underway now gives us that chance.

Swan River Report 1/1/2013

The weather has finally given me the motivation to go for a fish; Trev was pretty keen to give the bream a go as well, so we headed off to the Swan River to give them a go. We arrived there around 11.30 this morning to a slight breeze and soon had the boat on the water.

Rock Lobster Opening Dates 2013

Hi Mike
We are getting quite a few enquiries about the various rock lobster season opening dates and whether fishers can transit between open and closed areas.  I’ve attached a flyer here. The information is also on the DPIPWE website at:

Maria Island, Riedel Bay Report

We went around the back of Maria Island on the 17th of August , I was with Paul (my boyfriend), Gretel (my daughter) and Esta (our dog). My dad had been round there the weekend before and did okay, so we thought we'd try it out. We hadn't been on a fishing trip on the new boat (a 35 Caribbean) so seemed a great place to go on such a beautiful day. We were using soft plastics, although I'm not sure which ones.

Safe Fishing

G'day Mike,
Thought I would contribute an item in the the interest of safe fishing. Especially with the recent death of a father and son at nearby Bicheno.
To most people with half a brain in their head going to sea in an old timber dingy without any of the mandatory safety equipment right on dusk would sound like a disaster looking for a place to happen. Well, this is exactly what I witnessed last week.

Saw Shark off Port Sorell

Hi mike, thought you might be interested in seeing what my hubby Chris caught on a line a few weeks ago just off Port Sorell.  We took a couple of pics then returned it back to the waters.  We hadn't caught or seen one of these before but researched and found it was a saw shark.
Thanks, Anita.
Here is a starting point for a little research.  http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Saw_shark

A Quick Little Garfish Session

After few discussions about last weeks sensational Squid fishing, my dad was dead keen to head to the coast for some action. Whilst he doesn’t mind a feed of Calamari now and again he had been drilling me about the Garfish situation and how that was faring in Georges Bay.
The winter months, as a matter of fact anywhere from April to September, are prime time in St Helens for Garfish and the reports I had been hearing over the last few weeks of plentiful catches and big gars had me and the old man ready for a session.

Calamari at Georges Bay

Just had a few days at Georges Bay and was amazed at the size of the calamari. The specimen in the photo had a hood length of 43 centimetres and I caught another at 44cm.
The top lure was a pink Yamashita Egi Live I borrowed from Mike Stevens. Apparently they absorb light and are slightly warmer than the surrounding water. The squid certainly targeted them over my other jigs. I did a bit of research at http://www.ejtodd.com.au/Yamashita_Egi_Oh_Q_Live.html to see more.

Maldives Fishing

A short video of Mike Stevens recently in the Maldives catching a Trigger Fish.
Mike hooked the fish on a small Clouser and then setup his G1X Canon camera on the bank and filmed the sequence himself.
