Jacob (8) and Holly (7) from Richmond were getting in practice at Boomer Bay on Sunday for the St Helen's Grand Slam. This 450mm Leather Jacket gave Jake a good fight on light line, while Holly was content with a nice Cocky Salmon.

Another report from St.Helens

My brother Paul stayed on for a couple more days to do some more deep sea fishing and is having a ball catching some nice striped trumpeter, blue eye trevalla, morwong and some crays, Eddystone patch being the hot spot.
Wish I didn’t have to go back to work, look what I am missing out on!!!
Scamander river was where Nathan caught the tailor,

St Helens Fishing report

Fishing report on St.Helens over the xmas break.
Managed four "half days" fishing out wide when the wind wasn’t blowing,fished south of St.Helens island on two occasions and caught plenty of nice sand and tiger flatties, a few gummy sharks, some latchet and the usual pests of the sea ..the red gurnard.

St Helens Report October 24 2010

Had a boys trip to St Helens on the weekend with great results, plenty of big salmon mainly in Moulting Bay & some in the channel. Also bagged a few silver trevally in the channel during a real purple patch on Sat evening. All were caught on soft plastics with a variety being used.

Also had a great session on the flathead with a couple of beauties being boated at the 65m mark straight out from heads.

Fishing Report St Helens  20 03 2010

Travis, Jamie and his son Patrick (in one boat ) and Dale, his son Trevor, myself and daughter Demi (in another), made our way to St Helens this morning seeking Kingfish and Albacore Tuna.
 
Demi was very excited as she had always wanted to have a go at this type of fishing,  but up until now was always told to stay at home as I feared that the heavy sea's would make her sick .
My thinking was  it's a long day watching your daughter being sick over the side, (especially when I" ve been there myself on a couple of occasions!!!.)

St Helens tasfish.com Charity Grand Slam Results

This was a fantastic event thanks to both the competitors and sponsors. Sponsors were www.tasfish.com, Coastal Marine, Shimano and Rotary Club of St Helens.

Kicking off at 8 am there were 32 teams teams vying for glory. A lunch break had people replenished thanks to Coastal Marine and then everyone fished through until 4 pm. Results were collated and Michael Haley's team got up by one point. He guides on, and fishes, the bay every day so he was expected to do well. True Tales did an awesome job to get so close and Nick Crawford's ANSA 1 team did well to be hot on their tail. The scoring system seemed to work really well and there were no complaints.

The weather was kind, although a bit blowy a couple of times.

The Leukemia Foundation will benefit from the day and will receive all the entry money of $1600. This was possible as sponsors cover all the costs and prizes.

St Helens Kingfish

Hi Mike,
Thought you might like the attached photo of a couple kingfish caught at St Helens 24th January by my son Nathan and friend Mark. They had a ball trying to get them in. They were caught on the Bar Way using Halco lures.

I must admit , after yesterdays fishing trip to the Western Lakes, I thought things could only go one way..... and that was downhill.

We have just returned from St Helens.  Where all I can say is that I kicked ass!!  And am seriously thinking about becoming a fishing guide - I'm just beginning to realise how talented I am when it comes to fishing!!!! Ha ha ha

St Helens Albacore Report January 2010

Fishing wide of the shelf off St Helens Sunday 10 January, Rocky
Carosi and crew on Saltshaker landed four albacore up to six kilos in
weight and released a similar number. This signals the beginning of
what, hopefully, will be a good gamefishing season.  Water temperature
started at 17 degrees and peaked at 19 degrees celsius well past the
Continental Shelf. The albacore had been feeding on concentration of
lantern fish and very tiny assorted baitfish.

$11 000 fine for too many garfish

This was the heading in the Examiner Newspaper Friday 4 December.

It was reported that a Victorian fisher was fined nearly $11 000 after he was caught with 740 garfish fillets for which he had no commercial licence or proof of purchase. He also had in his possession more Australian salmon than the legal limit.

He was fined $480 in relation to the garfish with an additional Special Penalty of $10 200, plus $120 fine for the Australian salmon and a Special Penalty of $180.

The offender was apprehended after a tip off to the Fishwatch number 0427 655 557. If you hear of, or witness any illegal fishing call Fishwatch and report it. Even if the event you witnessed is over the Marine Police will keep a record. Get a boat or car registration number, time and place.

It is fantastic to see a result such as this.

Tiny creeks and sea run trout - Christopher Bassano

Christopher Bassano fishes over 250 days a year. This interview was recorded just before he headed off to fish for Australia in the World Fly Fishing Championships in Norway 14-17 August 2013.

I live on a small stream and at the start of the season I like to go off on a bit of a discovery mission and fish the headwaters of the creeks and rivers I feel an affinity with.

These small rivers include the St Pats, Meander, Forester, Little Forester and others. The further up you go on these rivers the clearer and lower the levels. They are often less affected by the rain and runoff and you get some good opportunities. Get as close to the source as you can and you will find some good dry fly fishing. Don’t limit yourself to those I have mentioned. Most headwaters will hold trout.
