Many anglers are preparing for the opening of the new angling season on Saturday 7 August and it's shaping up to be another good one with the fishery in excellent health as a result of last year’s drought breaking rains. There are many great fishing locations around the State from which to choose for the opening weekend and early season fishing but here are a few suggestions.
Took the kids down the end of Coles beach road, (on the rocky point), to try to catch a feed of squid over the reef.
Just as the sun disappeared behind Don Heads they came on the bite and we landed 10 good size one's in around an hour using squid jigs.
I recently spent four days up the North-West Coast with my wife and two children to do some maintenance around out property at Forest. After catching up with a mate (Marcus) who is a local on Friday night for a sensational BBQ, we put together a plan

Success ! After many visits to the jetty at Port Sorell we finally landed some nice fish for tea !
It was a very interesting to chat with some fellow fishermen, who had landed one fish for the day, but then both of our rods began twitching !

Caught recently on a kayak from the beach across from my house at Penguin. One hood measured 30 cm in length . As I gut them while still at sea I only return with the clean hoods. As you can see I ended up plastered with ink as the big squid wouldn't fit in my net.

The Mersey River is just one location around Devonport where some good fish can be caught and it is the one Leroy Tirant is going to give us a closer look at.
Fishing the Mersey River at Devonport is a year round proposition. Most of the bread and butter species can be caught here nearly year round with seasonal migrations of other fish.
This is by no means an in depth report but it will provide those with little knowledge of the area good starting points to at least get the kids onto some fish.

Fishing around Devonport in the last couple of weeks has been fantastic for anglers dropping a line in between the rain and or the wind. The Mersey has been producing some fantastic Silver Trevally up to a kilo. Most have been smaller juveniles but anglers taking the time to berley have been catching good numbers with the odd bigger fish amongst them.
