Coastal Catches 22/3/2012

I had a great moment this week when a customer came into the shop and told us about how he had taken his grandson out fly fishing at the upper Inglis river. His grandson had been practicing his casting and has become reasonably proficient. They were standing at a pool and grandfather asked grandson where he thought the biggest trout would be sitting, grandson points out the spot and puts a dry fly over the spot which is promptly engulfed by a 2lb trout which was duly landed. I think proud grandfather got a bigger kick out of this fish than grandson and it goes to show what a fantastic sport fishing is for families spending quality time together.

There are a few snapper being caught along the coast. I had a customer from Devonport telling me about two snapper that he caught on the eastern side of the Mersey River near the mouth. The Circular Head area is certainly one of the other snapper hot spots.
Gummy shark are being caught along the coast. Black River Beach near Stanley has been a popular destination. Pardo Beach at Devonport and Some of the Ulverstone Beaches are well worth a look. A good way to attract them to where you are fishing is to use a small plastic burley cage above your sinker. Mix a bit of fish oil with the burly for extra attraction. If you are fishing at Port Sorell you need to be aware that it is a shark refuge area and it is prohibited to take sharks. Trout have been a bit slow over the past couple of weeks but the cooler weather and increased river flows should see them with a new lease of life. I did hear a whisper that Huntsman Lake is worth a look. A couple of Burnie anglers had a trip there recently and caught good numbers of fish around the 1lb mark with spinners and soft plastics. There have been some better fish caught at the Great Lake recently particularly rainbows.
Australian salmon were being caught late last week off Cooee and out from the Cam River.
There have been a few snotty trevally caught at the Stanley Wharf recently so hopefully they will be present in increasing numbers soon.
