Another successful Trout Weekend

by Tim Farell Inland Fisheries Service

What a success, 4 000 people, car park full and 150 cars in the overflow car park. As a consequence of the huge attendance the local police officer spent three hours on the Lake Highway directing traffic on the Saturday and one and a half hours on Sunday. The weather was cold and misty but most the people had come prepared dressed in warm clothing, although a few people were spotted wearing t-shirts. Exhibitors included MAST, Hydro Tasmania, Quarantine Tasmania, the Cancer Council, tackle stores, outdoor equipment stores, Cressy Trout Expo, Anglers Alliance Tasmania and the Fox Task Force. The Bothwell District School had over 60 paintings on display produced by the local children. There were demonstrations of fly tying and fly-casting that proved popular as well.

Little Lake 6/1/2013

We decided to have a look up at Little Lake this arvo with Bailey & the Mad Hungarian George. We landed 19 brownies between us, most were caught on the dry with a couple on small wets later on in the day when the wind picked up. Fish were feeding on damsels and dragonflys, jumping out of the water all over the place.

It was very had to catch though, we had to work for what we got. They were cruising very fast, no good casting to where they took off the top as they would be long gone. We had to try and judge which way they headed off and try to cast a metre in front of them and a lot of the time they ignored our offerings.
All of the fish were in good nick, we only kept seven for a feed. Their size was only small, around the 1lb mark. We had a beaut day, sunny with slight southerly breeze, getting a little stronger later on.
