Small streams are sweet

Mike Stevens gives some tips about fishing small streams for little fish.
I don’t particularly chase big fish. I like to catch them of course, but often I would rather catch ten small trout in a stream, rather than one big trout in a lake.
Recently I had some Victorian friends over and they also love the small northern streams. Fishing these predominately with small dry flies is such fun I can barely even begin to describe it. Most headwater streams have enough water and the eager little trout will come up and inspect your offerings.

Great Lake Report 3/11/2013

Well with all the strong wind, bad weather, and work commitments until this weekend I hadn't been able to wet a line for the season.
But I've kicked it off with a bang. Having a few days off on holidays this week and had a look at Willy Weather on the net decided to give it a bash and go to the Great Lake. Arriving at lunch time on Thursday started fishing at 4pm, by 8;30 had 4 nice Brownies in the boat about 1lbs, 1 Rainbow 1 1/2 lbs, and a 2 1/2 lbs Rainbow, released 2 smaller Brownies, and lost another 2 at the boat.

Lake Leake  Report 3/11/2013

We went to Lake Leake early yesterday morning after a few wind lane feeders and found a few rising but they were often only ”oncers". We  managed a nice rainbow, broke on the strike on another (which looked like a very good fish) and also caught a smallish rainbow. The fish very hard to catch as there is an abundance of stick caddis in the water and they are gorged full of them.

Great Lake Report 2/11/2013

Had a trip up to Great Lake today with a mate from Hobart, Graeme Cox. I met Coxy at Great Lake Lodge at around 10am and headed up the highway to a track down the lake just past Boundary Bay. We put the boat in and we headed over to Elizabeth Bay, very sunny and calm conditions, which made things a bit tough, but we managed five nice fish.

Morass Bay - Arthurs Lake

Before and after shots of the boat launching area at Morass Bay. No parking signs have been installed on the approach to keep the area clear for turning and launching (Stephen and Adam please use obstruction infringement/caution if required). Parking is available on Nielsen Crescent approx 50m walk from the ramp until the lake level drops. No Parking signs will be removed when there is enough space for parking at the ramp.

Lake Leake Report 25/10/2013

Well, with a few calm days on our hands. We were hoping we might have stirred up a few fish. We stirred them up alright, just not enough to jump on to our lures! With follow after follows, no such luck.

Bronte Lagoon

Four Springs 28/10/2013

I took Bailey out to Four Springs Lake after school today as he hasn't wet a line for a while. He fished up the eastern shore north of the ramp and got a small rainbow in the first ten minutes. He released it not long after that he landed a nice fat rainbow around the 3lb mark. He had a few hits and boils as well, but not hooking up - then disaster struck - his bail arm on his reel snapped. He snapped too - would have got a few more I reckon.

Lake Leake Fishing Report October 2013

Lake Leake has had its fair share of wet, wild and windy days since my last report, with over 5 inches of rain, filling up the lake. Many boats have come back in without a trout, while others have put in the time and caught one or two, nice average trout around the 2 pound mark.

Little Pine 12/10/2013

John Fordham and myself decided to head up the lakes mid friday afternoon, plenty of wind forcast along with a few showers. Hopefully we should find somewhere sheltered to have a flick. We arrived at Dereks Shack, unloaded the gear and went for a drive to check out some possibles. We came back to the shack and settled down for the night, watched TV and some video’s and decided we would head for Little Pine.

Curries River Dam 15/9/2013

Trev and I made the last minute decision to head down to Curries River Dam for a fish and to try out the new yep rainbow trout hard lure. We arrived at 3.00 pm and fished for a couple of hours. The new lure colour didn't let us down it took no time to get the first fish in the boat. This fishery will get a fair flogging from us this season as it never lets us down and has strong hard fighting fish. We also saw one take a dunn.

Lake Leake Fishing Report September 2013

By Samuel Evans
With winter finally behind us, spring has arrived, along with the swallows.
Insects are hatching and the trout are on the move. Spring has brought warmer weather with water temperature increasing a couple of degrees, making the trout a bit more active.
There have been a few rough wild and windy days, at the lake, most fishermen have been accessing the lake from the boat ramp around at Lake Leake, then taking to the shelted parts of the lake by boat, but for us and our 4hp motor we wouldn’t have got out of Kalangadoo Bay, the wind would have pushed us back up onto the boat ramp, so we waited for calmer, safer days, which has given us some awesome catches from our boat, along with fishing from the shore.

Lake Leake 2/9/2013

An early afternoon phone call and a bit of enthusiasm was all that was needed...Mike Stevens arrived at my place around 1.30pm and soon we were on our way to Lake Leake with his newly renovated Purdon Dingy in tow. We weren’t on the water long when we had couple of nice fish onboard to christen it, finished with 4 trout (2 rainbows, 2 browns) along with one massive perch.

 Lake Leake 2/9/2013

I was going to head up to Cramps Bay today, but with a forecast of 25 knot nw winds up there, I decided to have another crack at Lake Leake with George Papp instead. We arrived around 11.30am and had our bags by 3pm.
Fished up the Snowy again and caught fish on Yep golden seducer, red nut and Black & Gold T.Tails.
Gusty nw wind and with sunny periods, fish again in good condition with the best being around the 5lb mark.

Lake Dulverton 21/8/2013

My son, Alex & I took a slow trip to Launceston (for my niece's 21st celebration) on Saturday (17th Aug)  with intent to fish Brumby's Creek out of Cressy but stopped by Oatlands at Lake Dulverton. Its level was down but should fill up perhaps after the northern weekend rain.

Lake Leake 24/8/2013

I decided to have a look at Lake Leake today with the Mad Hungarian George Papp. We arrived around 11am to a full lake, headed up towards the snowy and started drifting across the bay in 1.5mts of water. We were casting Dales Yep lures about as well as the gold and black t.tails.
We mainly stuck to fishing this area and caught the majority of fish here.

Tooms Lake Report 22/8/2013

Back home, after a rather cool few days on Tooms one of the coldest nights on Tues.night don't know what it got down to, but there was  plenty of ice around the shore in the morning.
The water temperature never rose above 6.1 c, nevertheless I managed 5 very nice browns and lost 1 along side and 1 due to poor net practice.
Most were caught drift spinning, with Dales Red Nut the main weapon of choice. Thanks Dale.
This coming weekend may well be nice weather, and with some good Westerly weather should help.
Myself, a mate, and one other camper were the only inhabitants in residence.
All the best to my fellow Presidents for the angling ahead.
Pres. Reg Travers

Four Springs 15/8/2013

I met my friend John and his junior angler @ Foursey today, keen to break my recent “Trout drought”. By lunchtime Lachlan had landed one, John had dropped one, and I’d had just one hit but no hookup. My companions had to leave early afternoon, but I stayed on.

Huntsmans Lake 16/8/2013

We had a quick trip to Huntsman today started fishing at 7.30am and finished at 10am. We managed to land three fish (kept this time), for some elderly people I know who only like small to medium size fish to eat.

Four Springs Report 16/8/2013

I had a look at Four Springs with Bailey today after school. It was only a small session, as we didnt have a great deal of time to fish. We did got a couple hours in though.
We managed a few nice browns caught on black and golds and Dales Yep KW Galaxia, dropped a few and missed a few others, but that's fishing, you dont catch them all.

Lake Leake Report – 11/8/2013

Hi everyone, Mick took Connor and me around to the Northern side of the lake for a fish (Snake Rock). He lent Connor and me a set of waders as we are saving up to buy our own.
When we got to our destination, we chucked on the waders, and I grabbed my fly rod out of the back, and Connor went for his spinning rod, and Mick got his Fly rod.
